Us Tariffs Come into Effect As Countries Prepare to Retaliate

US Tariffs Kick In as Canada, Mexico, and China Prepare to Retaliate

The United States has officially imposed tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and the Chinese mainland, sparking a trade showdown with its key partners. Despite warnings from economists, trade groups, and business leaders, the tariffs went into effect on Tuesday, aiming to bolster US manufacturing and tighten border security.

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on February 1, introducing a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada, and a 10% tariff on imports from the Chinese mainland. While the tariffs on Canada and Mexico were delayed for a month to allow for negotiations, that grace period has now expired.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly expressed readiness to respond immediately. “This is an existential threat to Canada, with thousands of jobs at stake,” Joly said on Monday. She emphasized that Canada is prepared to implement previously announced retaliatory tariffs of 25% on 155 billion Canadian dollars (approximately $107 billion) worth of American goods.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum called for calm but assured the public that her administration has multiple backup plans. “We have prepared Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, and Plan D,” she stated, without elaborating further. Recent meetings between Mexican and US officials were described as productive, but Mexico is ready to act if necessary.

The Chinese mainland has firmly opposed the US tariffs, which include an additional 10% on top of the earlier 10% announced in February. In response, China has filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization’s dispute settlement mechanism and announced its own tariffs ranging from 10% to 15% on certain US food and agricultural products.

A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce criticized the US action, highlighting that it violates international trade rules. The spokesperson urged the US to approach the issues objectively and return to dialogue, noting that China maintains some of the strictest anti-drug policies globally, countering US claims regarding fentanyl.

As tensions escalate, the global community watches closely, with many concerned about the potential impact on international trade and the global economy.
