Chinese FM Wang Yi: Tech Blockades Spark Innovation and Breakthrough

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi declared on Friday that technological blockades and restrictions cannot suppress China’s spirit of innovation. Speaking at the sidelines of the third session of the 14th National People’s Congress, Wang emphasized that science and technology should be a shared asset benefiting all of humanity, rather than a tool for division.

Responding to a question on China-US technology relations from a CGTN reporter, Wang criticized the strategy of using “high fences and small yards” to restrict China’s access to key technologies. He warned that efforts to decouple and disrupt supply chains would lead to self-isolation for those who impose such measures.

“Unjustified external suppression against China, whether in space science or chip making, has never stopped,” Wang said. “Yet, despite these challenges, China’s path to becoming a science and technology powerhouse is ever-expanding.”

He poignantly added, “Where there is blockade, there is breakthrough; where there is suppression, there is innovation; where there is the fiercest storm, there is the platform launching China’s science and technology skyward like the Chinese mythological hero Ne Zha soaring into the heavens.”

According to the 2025 government work report, China in 2024 achieved significant advancements in integrated circuits, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum technology, and other areas. Notably, the Chang’e-6 mission completed humanity’s first-ever sample collection from the far side of the moon, and the Mengxiang ocean drilling vessel was delivered and commissioned. The value of technology contract transactions increased by 11.2 percent.

Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted that generations of Chinese people have relentlessly pursued innovation. He stressed that mutual respect is fundamental in state-to-state relations and is crucial for maintaining stable China-US bilateral ties.

“No country should fantasize that it can suppress China while maintaining good relations with it,” Wang cautioned. “Such contradictory behavior undermines mutual trust and damages long-term stability.”
