The Boao Forum for Asia 2025 gathered leaders and experts to discuss the future of economic development in the region. A key topic was how the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) can leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and data transformation to drive growth while maintaining data security.
Chheng Kimlong, director of the Center for Governance Innovation and Democracy at the Asian Vision Institute, addressed these challenges during a session at the forum. Responding to a question from Ben Sokhean, national editor at Khmer Times, Kimlong emphasized the importance of balancing innovation with security measures.
“AI and data transformation offer immense opportunities for ASEAN countries to boost their economies,” Kimlong said. “However, we must be vigilant about data privacy and security to protect our citizens and maintain trust.”
He suggested that regional cooperation is essential in establishing common standards and regulations. “By working together, ASEAN nations can create a secure environment that fosters technological advancement while safeguarding data,” he added.
Participants at the forum highlighted the potential of AI to revolutionize industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and education in the region. They also acknowledged the need for investment in infrastructure and human capital to fully realize these benefits.
The discussion underscored the delicate balance between embracing innovation and ensuring that data security concerns are addressed. As ASEAN moves forward, the insights from leaders like Kimlong will be crucial in shaping policies that promote sustainable growth.
