Beijing, October 2023—Foreign companies are stepping up their commitment to sustainability in China, according to the 2024 Report on Foreign Companies’ ESG Actions in China released by China Media Group (CMG) on Thursday. The report highlights how these enterprises are integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into their local strategies, contributing to the country’s push for green development and high-quality growth.
ESG represents the three key pillars essential to a company’s long-term sustainable development and is widely regarded as a core component of corporate social responsibility. The report emphasizes that foreign companies are not only embracing these principles but are also localizing them to fit China’s unique context.
A significant feature of this year’s report is the unveiling of the “Top 20 ESG Pioneer Foreign Enterprises in China (2024).” Companies like China Samsung, Panasonic, Hyundai Motor China, Delta, and Apple (China) have been recognized for their innovative approaches to sustainability. They have shown a strong dedication to the Chinese market by addressing climate change, fostering new drivers of productivity, supporting rural revitalization, and enhancing sustainable supply chain management.
All 20 companies have prioritized responsible supply chain practices. Nearly 80 percent have implemented ESG standards for their suppliers, ensuring that sustainability is embedded throughout their operations. Additionally, approximately 60 percent have established research and development centers in China to accelerate the deployment of advanced technologies.
As China advances towards a more sustainable and inclusive future, these foreign-invested enterprises play an increasingly vital role. Their efforts align with China’s national priorities and demonstrate how global collaboration can contribute to environmental stewardship and social progress.
