China has criticized the United States over its use of tariffs, accusing it of harming the global economy, while pledging to continue opening up its markets to promote free trade and cooperation.
At a major international meeting in Washington D.C., Pan Gongsheng, who leads the People’s Bank of China, warned that the US’s widespread tariffs are shaking up the global economy. He said these policies are causing big swings in financial markets, threatening stability, and making things harder for developing countries.
Echoing these concerns, Chinese Finance Minister Lan Fo’an stated at a World Bank meeting that such protectionist trade policies are putting global efforts to reduce poverty and promote development at risk.
Earlier this week, Geng Shuang, China’s representative to the United Nations, criticized the US for its unilateral tariff increases. He argued that these actions not only target competitors like China but also harm vulnerable nations like Haiti, calling them “cruel and absurd” and “profoundly heartbreaking.”
While criticizing US policies, China is reaffirming its commitment to openness and inclusivity. Lan highlighted that China offers zero-tariff treatment to all least developed countries it has diplomatic relations with. He emphasized China’s dedication to opening its vast market to the world to promote shared growth and mutual benefits.
Meanwhile, Pan reiterated China’s support for working together through multilateralism, free trade, and economic globalization. He called for better coordination on economic policies to strengthen global trade systems and promote stability.
