NDB President Dilma Rousseff Envisions a New World through Multilateral Cooperation

In a recent interview with CMG, Dilma Rousseff, President of the New Development Bank (NDB), shared her vision for a new world grounded in multilateralism and enhanced cooperation among nations. She emphasized the importance of respecting diverse civilizations and governance systems to foster global harmony and progress.

“I hope we can build a new world, one founded on a multilateral order and greater cooperation, while also respecting different civilizations and governance systems,” Rousseff expressed in the interview. The conversation, originally conducted in Portuguese, was translated into Chinese and then into English.

Rousseff, who served as the President of Brazil from 2011 to 2016, now leads the NDB—an institution established by the BRICS nations: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The bank aims to support infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging economies, promoting growth and development through financial cooperation.

Highlighting the role of the NDB in the global arena, she stated, “Our mission is to mobilize resources for infrastructure and sustainable development in BRICS and other emerging economies. Through collective efforts, we can address common challenges and contribute to a more equitable world.”

Rousseff underscored the necessity of embracing multilateral approaches to tackle global issues such as poverty, inequality, and climate change. She advocated for stronger partnerships and open dialogues among nations to build mutual understanding and shared solutions.

“By respecting different paths of development and governance, we not only honor the unique identities of each nation but also pave the way for collaborative progress,” she added.

Her call for increased cooperation comes at a time when the world faces unprecedented challenges that require unified responses. Rousseff’s vision resonates with the aspirations of many in the Global South, emphasizing solidarity and collective action as keys to building a better future.
