Meet the New Farmers Revolutionizing China’s Countryside

In the rolling fields of central China’s Hubei Province, a revolution is quietly underway. A team of eight innovators, led by farmer Bai Jianfeng, is transforming traditional agriculture through cutting-edge technology. Utilizing remote sensing and intelligent pest control, they are reimagining what farming can be. Their ambitious vision? To establish fully unmanned farms within the next five to ten years.

Further south, in the lush landscapes of China’s countryside, Shi Yan is pioneering a different kind of agricultural revolution. As the founder of Shared Harvest, Shi Yan is committed to organic farming, cultivating crops without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Once a doctoral graduate from Renmin University of China, she is now a trailblazer in sustainable agriculture, dedicated to protecting the environment and reshaping how we think about food production.

Meanwhile, former city dwellers Lang Huichen and Wu Fei have left behind the urban hustle to bring a taste of modern culture to rural areas. They founded “Hello! Fellow Villager,” a unique café that has become a cultural hub connecting urban and rural life. More than just serving coffee, the café creates jobs, including for staff with disabilities, and offers tutoring to local children. Their small business is brewing a brighter future for China’s countryside, exemplifying the spirit of rural revitalization.

In southern China’s Hainan Province, law professor Zhang Xia is sowing seeds of a different kind. Moving from the classroom to the fields, she empowers rural communities by spreading legal knowledge and fostering self-governance. Professor Zhang believes that understanding the law is key to unlocking the potential of rural development. Her journey in the coastal village of Damao highlights the impact of education and self-empowerment in transforming communities.

These new farmers and innovators are reshaping China’s countryside, blending tradition with innovation, and inspiring a new generation to look at agriculture—and rural life—in a whole new light.
