Uzbekistan’s automotive scene is shifting into high gear as the nation embraces electric and hybrid vehicles. Leading this transformation is BYD, the Chinese automaker renowned for its innovative electric cars and battery technology.
At the recent International Investment Forum in Tashkent, Ivan Cao, Managing Director of BYD Central Asia, shared his optimism about the future of Uzbekistan’s car market. “The market is opening and liberalizing. Numerous Chinese brands are entering Uzbekistan, which will foster healthy competition,” he said. “In this environment, monopoly simply cannot exist.”
BYD established its manufacturing plant in Uzbekistan in 2024, already producing over 10,000 vehicles. With an annual capacity of 50,000 vehicles, the company plans to steadily increase production. “By 2025, we aim to produce 20,000 to 25,000 electric cars locally,” Cao announced. “We are also exploring export opportunities to neighboring countries in partnership with local collaborators.”
The surge in electric and hybrid vehicles has been remarkable. In 2024, new energy vehicles accounted for over 15% of the market share in Uzbekistan, a figure expected to surpass 20% this year. “Once infrastructure is fully developed, electric cars will become the obvious choice,” Cao predicted, highlighting the importance of expanding charging networks and consumer interest in clean energy.
The competitive landscape is changing rapidly. Innovations like BYD’s Uzbek-language interface are being adopted by other manufacturers, offering consumers more options than ever before. “Buyers now have a wider choice—from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric and hybrid models. Every day, new players enter, improving the overall experience for consumers,” Cao explained.
The International Investment Forum attracted over 8,000 participants, including government officials, investors, and business leaders. The event showcased Uzbekistan’s industrial potential, with 90 companies from diverse sectors exhibiting their products.
As Uzbekistan accelerates towards a more sustainable future, the influx of new energy vehicles and the rise of competition signal exciting times ahead for young drivers eager to embrace the latest automotive technologies.
