The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), established in 2015, is reshaping global development through its commitment to multilateral cooperation and sustainable growth. Founded at China’s initiative, the AIIB has rapidly expanded its reach, growing from 57 founding members to 110, representing over 80% of the world’s population and more than 60% of global GDP.
Focusing on infrastructure development and regional connectivity, the AIIB has approved 318 projects with total financing exceeding $60 billion, mobilizing over $200 billion in capital for infrastructure construction. These initiatives have not only improved infrastructure but also enhanced the quality of life in numerous countries, especially in developing regions.
One significant project includes a $165 million loan to Bangladesh to upgrade its power distribution system, providing rural areas with better access to electricity. In response to global challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters, the AIIB swiftly provided nearly $14.7 billion in emergency funding to 26 developing members, supporting economic recovery and improving livelihoods.
Embracing its core values of being “lean, clean, and green,” the AIIB is dedicated to promoting sustainable and low-carbon development. In recent years, climate financing has accounted for over half of the AIIB’s total approved financing, with a commitment to allocate at least 50% of its annual financing approvals to climate finance through 2030.
By championing multilateralism and adhering to principles of extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits, the AIIB serves as a vital bridge between developing countries and advanced economies.
