Washington D.C. — President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” Act has ignited a heated debate across the United States. Passed narrowly in the Senate with Vice President Vance casting the tie-breaking vote, the bill promises significant tax cuts for high-income earners while reducing funding for key social welfare programs.
The legislation seeks to expand upon the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act from Trump’s first term, proposing reductions in individual tax rates and raising the state and local tax deduction caps. Married couples filing jointly could see their deduction cap rise to $32,000, while single filers might see an increase to $16,000.
However, to offset these tax cuts, the bill plans to scale back spending on Medicaid, food assistance, education, and clean energy initiatives. Critics argue that these cuts will widen the federal deficit and leave many low-income individuals without essential support. According to a report by the Congressional Budget Office on June 17, the bill could add $2.8 trillion to the deficit.
Labor organizations like the AFL-CIO warn that approximately 179 million Americans relying on employer-sponsored health insurance may face annual premium increases of up to $485 per person. The bill also proposes eliminating healthcare subsidies and revoking Medicare eligibility for undocumented immigrants.
Environmental advocates are concerned about provisions that terminate subsidies for new energy vehicles and impose new fees on them. Entrepreneur Elon Musk criticized the bill, stating it “will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country.”
As the nation grapples with these changes, many are questioning whether the bill will truly “make America great again,” or if it will deepen economic divides and social tensions.
