Young Entrepreneurs from Taiwan and Macao Thrive in China’s Greater Bay Area

After three years working for a major internet company in Shenzhen, Zhou Boyan felt the call of entrepreneurship. In 2019, he founded an events and design company in the vibrant southern metropolis, tapping into its bustling night markets. Despite the challenges, Zhou has spread his wings and is now helping other young people from Taiwan find opportunities on the Chinese mainland.

In Hengqin, the development boom has opened new doors for young entrepreneurs from Macao. Friends Leong Ka Seng and Sio Ka Un have opened a Macao-style tea restaurant, bringing a taste of their hometown to the mainland. Known for their warmth and strong community ties, these tea restaurants are a vital part of Macao’s culture. Sio Ka Un, inheriting his family’s culinary skills, aims to share the authentic flavors of Macao with more people.

Zhang Yiling balances two contrasting roles: a composed and serious lawyer who rarely smiles, and a lively online influencer who beams into the camera. She moved from Taiwan to the modern metropolis of Shenzhen nearly two decades ago. Since then, Zhang has enriched her own life and inspired many young people from Taiwan to pursue their dreams in China’s Greater Bay Area.

Lawyer Ao Sio Peng frequently travels between Guangdong and Macao. Thanks to a pilot scheme allowing lawyers from Hong Kong and Macao to practice in nine cities of China’s Greater Bay Area, she sees limitless opportunities on the Chinese mainland. In addition to her work in Macao, Ao is involved in legal cases in Foshan and Guangzhou, using her expertise to serve more residents. She hopes more young people from Macao will explore the opportunities available on the mainland.
