China Calls for Fair Play Among Food Delivery Giants
China’s top market regulator has urged the nation’s three major food delivery platforms—Ele.me, Meituan, and JD.com—to regulate their promotional activities and compete fairly. This comes after the platforms rolled out aggressive low-price strategies and subsidies to attract more users.
Recently, the companies launched various promotions, including Meituan’s massive “100 billion yuan subsidy” plan. While these deals might seem great for young consumers who rely on food delivery, the intense competition has raised concerns about market stability and long-term sustainability.
In a meeting with the platforms, the State Administration for Market Regulation emphasized the importance of following China’s laws on e-commerce, anti-unfair competition, and food safety. The regulator reminded the companies of their responsibility to ensure fair competition and protect consumer rights.
The administration called on the platforms to work together to promote a healthy and sustainable food delivery industry. By fostering a fair market environment, the platforms can continue to innovate and serve consumers without compromising the industry’s future.
