China’s ambitious South-to-North Water Diversion Project has moved an astonishing 76.5 billion cubic meters of water to the country’s dry northern regions. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the project has benefited over 185 million people, supplying water to 45 large and medium-sized cities along its eastern and central routes.
The central route, the most significant of the three planned paths, begins at the Danjiangkou Reservoir in Hubei Province. It winds through Henan and Hebei provinces before reaching the bustling cities of Beijing and Tianjin. The eastern route transfers water from Jiangsu Province to areas like Tianjin and Shandong.
Wang Annan, chairman of the China South-to-North Water Diversion Corporation Limited, announced at a recent forum that follow-up projects for both the central and eastern routes are progressing smoothly. Additionally, preliminary work on the western route is underway.
In the first ten months of this year, China’s investment in water conservancy projects reached nearly 1.09 trillion yuan ($151.66 billion), marking an 11.7 percent increase compared to last year.
