Eight people have been confirmed dead after a boat capsized on the Pingzheng River in southwest China’s Guizhou Province, local authorities reported.
The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Monday in Congjiang County. Thirteen individuals were aboard the privately-operated vessel when it overturned. Five people were rescued and are currently in stable condition.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. The Pingzheng River is a well-traveled waterway in the region, and the incident has raised concerns about safety measures on privately-operated boats.
