China has called on the Philippines to cease what it describes as “provocative actions” in disputed waters around Houteng Jiao, part of the Nansha Qundao islands, known internationally as the Spratly Islands. According to a statement from the China Coast Guard (CCG) on Monday, several Philippine vessels were found “illegally gathering” in the area under the pretense of fishing.
CCG spokesperson Liu Dejun reported that the Philippine vessels ignored warnings from Chinese authorities. He also noted that the vessels were accompanied by media reporters, suggesting they were staging scenes for publicity. “China holds indisputable sovereignty over Nansha Qundao, including Houteng Jiao, and the surrounding waters,” Liu emphasized.
“We urge the Philippines to cease its provocative actions, stop distorting facts, and refrain from engaging in sensational propaganda,” Liu stated. He added that the CCG will continue to conduct rights protection and law enforcement activities in waters under China’s jurisdiction to firmly safeguard the nation’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights.
The South China Sea is a vital waterway for global trade and has been a point of contention among several nations, including China and the Philippines. The area is rich in resources and holds strategic military importance.
