The 6th Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF) opened with grandeur on Friday evening in the tropical city of Sanya, Hainan Province, China. Co-hosted by China Media Group (CMG) and the People’s Government of Hainan Province, the festival promises a vibrant showcase of international and domestic films.
Liu Xiaoming, governor of Hainan Province and chairman of the festival’s organizing committee, inaugurated the event. In his opening speech, Liu highlighted China’s evolution from a significant film producer to an emerging film powerhouse. He emphasized that Hainan is committed to enhancing its cultural identity through the development of the film industry.
“The film festival aims to become a core platform for artistic exchange, a significant window for international engagement, and a symbol of China’s cultural charm,” Liu stated. He noted that the festival embraces the principles of “year-round screenings, island-wide participation, public involvement, and full industry chain coverage,” which have boosted its international recognition and influence.
Fan Yun, deputy editor-in-chief of CMG and editor-in-chief of CGTN, also addressed the audience, underlining the festival’s role as a stage for cultural exchange and mutual learning among civilizations. “Films can take the audience into a realm where diverse cultures coexist, allowing souls to blend and emotions to resonate,” Fan said.
Highlighting the fusion of technology and cinema, Fan Yun noted that film is a perfect blend of thought, art, and innovation. CMG is actively promoting the “5G+4K/8K+AI” strategy, utilizing intelligent technology to drive advancements in the film and television industry.
“Innovation has no end, and the future is now,” Fan said. “Smart technology will become the most cutting-edge way to tell human stories, opening broader prospects for the development of the film industry.”
This year’s festival theme, “From Oceans, with Visions“, reflects its expansive outlook. With 4,330 film submissions from 117 countries and regions—over 70 percent being international entries—the festival showcases a rich tapestry of global cinema.
French filmmaker Luc Besson serves as the president of the international jury for this edition. Celebrated French actress Sophie Marceau has been invited as an ambassador, and renowned Chinese actor Ge You is the New Year ambassador.
The festival will conclude on December 10, where 10 major awards, including Best Film and Best Director, will be announced. Attendees from around the world, including representatives from Russia, France, Spain, Hungary, and Austria, are joining to celebrate the art of cinema.
As the festival unfolds, Hainan continues its journey to becoming a beacon in the global film industry, fostering innovation and embracing international collaboration.
