China has defended its recent actions against Philippine vessels near Huangyan Island, asserting that it acted lawfully to protect its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines stated on Friday that the Philippines attempted to intrude into China’s territorial waters surrounding Huangyan Island, also known as Scarborough Shoal. The spokesperson emphasized that China’s response was necessary and in accordance with international law.
“The U.S. ambassador to the Philippines overlooked basic facts and made groundless accusations against China’s legitimate measures for protecting its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests,” the spokesperson said. “We firmly oppose and condemn her accusation.”
The remarks come after the U.S. ambassador expressed concerns over China’s actions in the disputed region. China and the Philippines have longstanding territorial disputes in the South China Sea, with both nations claiming sovereignty over Huangyan Island.
China maintains that its actions are justified and calls for respect of its territorial integrity. The situation underscores ongoing tensions in the region and highlights the importance of diplomatic dialogue between the involved parties.
