The 2024 Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF) kicked off on Friday in the vibrant city of Sanya, south China. The festival brought together renowned French filmmakers, including jury president Luc Besson and festival ambassador Sophie Marceau, in a celebration that bridges Eastern and Western cinematic traditions.

Luc Besson, known for his iconic films like Léon: The Professional and The Fifth Element, expressed his excitement about exploring the rich tapestry of Chinese cinema. "China has a unique storytelling perspective that resonates globally," he said. Sophie Marceau added, "This festival is a fantastic opportunity to discover new talents and stories from this part of the world."

French actress Nathalie Boyer shared her enthusiasm with CGTN, stating that the Chinese film industry holds great promise in Europe. "There is a growing interest in Chinese movies among European audiences," she noted. "I’m particularly keen on the innovative narratives and cultural depth that Chinese filmmakers bring to the screen."

The HIIFF aims to foster cultural exchange and collaboration between Eastern and Western filmmakers. With the participation of international icons and rising stars, the festival is set to showcase a diverse array of films that highlight the universal language of cinema.

As the festival unfolds, audiences can look forward to a week filled with screenings, workshops, and discussions that celebrate the art of filmmaking. The collaboration between French and Chinese cinema not only opens doors for new creative ventures but also strengthens the global film community.
