From Sea to Screen: Hainan International Film Festival Makes a Splash

The 6th Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIFF) kicked off in Sanya on Friday, unveiling its theme “From Oceans, with Visions.” The opening ceremony enchanted audiences with poetic Chinese performances, featuring classic film medleys, mini-musicals, and dance routines.

This year’s festival has attracted a staggering 4,330 entries from 117 countries and regions, all vying for the prestigious Golden Coconut Awards. On the opening night, 32 finalists were announced, including 14 feature films, eight documentaries, and 10 short films.

HIFF is also spotlighting international cultural exchanges, commemorating the 60th anniversary of China-France diplomatic relations. Activities include showcases of new French films, retrospectives celebrating Sino-French cinematic ties, and a Spanish Film Week.

Renowned French filmmaker Luc Besson chairs the international jury, while celebrated French actress Sophie Marceau serves as the festival’s image ambassador. Chinese actor Ge You steps in as the New Year ambassador.

Over 100 films will be screened in partnership with 20 cinemas across Hainan Island. Outdoor screenings are set in scenic locations like Haikou, Sanya, Wanning, and Lingshui, offering movie lovers a rich viewing experience intertwined with cultural festivities.

The festival is set to conclude on December 10, when winners of the 10 Golden Coconut Awards, including Best Film, Jury Grand Prize, and Best Director, will be announced.
