Georgian Film ‘Holy Electricity’ Takes Top Honors at Hainan Film Festival

The 6th Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF) wrapped up with a glittering awards ceremony on December 10 in Sanya, China. The night belonged to the Georgian film ‘Holy Electricity’, which clinched the coveted Best Picture award.

The festival celebrated outstanding filmmaking from around the globe. The Serbian entry ’78 Days’ was honored with the Grand Jury Prize, highlighting its remarkable storytelling and cinematic excellence. French director Laetitia Dosch took home the Best Director award for her work on ‘Dog on Trial’, impressing audiences and critics alike.

Standout Performances and Scripts

In the acting categories, Alberth Merma was named Best Actor for his compelling performance in ‘Through Rocks and Clouds’, while Preeti Panigrahi won Best Actress for her role in the coming-of-age film ‘Girls Will Be Girls’. The award for Best Scriptwriter was shared by Ruth Becquart and Leonardo Van Dijl for their thought-provoking screenplay in ‘Julie Keeps Quiet’.

Chinese Cinema in the Spotlight

China’s own Dong Zijian made a remarkable debut as a director with his feature film ‘My Friend An Delie’, earning both the Best Visual Effect award and Best Chinese Contribution of the Year. His work signaled a promising new voice in Chinese cinema.

Documentary and Short Film Honors

The Best Documentary Film award went to ‘An Oscillating Shadow’, a profound exploration of human experiences, while ‘Vox Humana’ received the Best Short Film award, captivating viewers with its concise yet impactful storytelling.

Chaired by renowned French filmmaker Luc Besson, the jury praised the exceptional quality of the submissions this year. “Our primary focus was on how these films connect emotionally with the audience,” the panel stated. “Compelling storytelling, strong performances, and a director’s vision are crucial in forging that meaningful connection.”
