Former Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou is set to lead a delegation of young people from Taiwan on a visit to mainland China from December 18 to 26, according to a mainland spokesperson.
Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council’s Taiwan Affairs Office, announced on Wednesday that the delegation will explore Heilongjiang Province in the northeast and Sichuan Province in the southwest. During their visit to Heilongjiang, they will participate in the Cross-Straits Youth Ice and Snow Festival.
Zhu extended a warm welcome to Ma and the delegation, emphasizing that the mainland will arrange various activities for them. She highlighted China’s rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes, referring to the nation as the shared home of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
Zhu expressed hopes that young people from both sides can engage in frequent exchanges, jointly promote traditional Chinese culture, and work together to enhance cross-Strait cooperation in various fields. “Young people are the future of cross-Strait relations,” she said.
Ma Ying-jeou, who served as Taiwan’s president from 2008 to 2016, has been active in promoting cross-Strait relations. His leadership of this youth delegation signifies ongoing efforts to bridge understanding and foster collaboration between Taiwan and mainland China.
She also called on compatriots across the Strait to safeguard and build their common homeland, striving for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
