The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has opened its doors to Chinese intangible cultural heritage with the launch of the "Belt and Road" International Handicraft Art Exhibition. The exhibition, hosted in collaboration with Shanghai University, features an array of traditional Chinese arts and crafts, including paper cuttings, embroidery, silk tapestries, New Year paintings known as nianhua, kites, and purple clay teapots.
Themed "Dialogue with World Cultures," the exhibition aims to foster cultural exchange and mutual understanding between South Africa and China. Visitors have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich history and artistry of Chinese handicrafts, many of which have been passed down through generations.
"This exhibition is a unique opportunity for our students and the broader community to experience the beauty and depth of Chinese culture firsthand," said a UJ spokesperson. "We’re thrilled to host such a diverse collection of artworks that highlight the skills and traditions of Chinese artisans."
The exhibition is open to the public at the UJ Art Gallery until January 25. After its stint in Johannesburg, the exhibition will continue its global tour, traveling to countries including Australia, France, Italy, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, Sweden, and Turkey.
