Burundi’s Big Plans: Learning from China’s Rise, Says Ambassador

Burundi is turning to China for inspiration as it seeks to boost its development and attract investment. In a recent interview, Burundian Ambassador to China, Telesphore Irambona, highlighted the growing friendship between the two nations and outlined ambitious plans for collaboration in agriculture, infrastructure, and energy.

“One of President Ndayishimiye’s main goals during his visits to China was to learn from their development experience,” said Ambassador Irambona. “China’s journey from a developing country to a global powerhouse is something we can learn a lot from.”

Boosting Agriculture with Zero-Tariff Policies

Ambassador Irambona expressed optimism about China’s zero-tariff treatment for Burundian products, which is expected to significantly enhance agricultural production in the East African nation. “This policy opens up new markets for our farmers and encourages growth in the agricultural sector,” he remarked.

An Attractive Destination for Chinese Investors

With its strategic location in East Africa, abundant natural resources, and a young, vibrant workforce, Burundi is positioning itself as an attractive destination for Chinese investors. “We invite Chinese businesses to explore the opportunities that Burundi offers,” said the ambassador. “Our country is ripe for investment in various sectors.”

Lessons in Leadership

The ambassador also praised China’s leadership, attributing the country’s remarkable achievements to its excellent governance. “Strong leadership is key to development,” he noted. “We believe that by learning from China’s experience, we can achieve similar success.”
