The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) will determine the timing of any military exercises based on its own needs and the situation on the ground, according to Wu Qian, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense. Speaking on Friday, Wu emphasized the PLA’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Responding to media queries about potential military drills following Taiwan regional leader Lai Ching-te’s recent transit through Hawaii and Guam, Wu reaffirmed the PLA’s mission. “Any attempt to split the nation through soliciting external support or resorting to force will be punished and will never succeed,” he stated.
Wu highlighted the shared interests of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, underscoring the PLA’s role in defending these common interests. The comments come amid rising tensions over Taiwan, with China emphasizing its stance on national unity.
