In a recent speech at the U.S.-China Business Council’s 2024 Gala Dinner in Washington, D.C., Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng emphasized that underestimating China is unwise and that any attempts to contain the nation are bound to fail.
“China’s economy is on a steady, sound, and upward trajectory,” Ambassador Xie declared. “We are fully capable of ensuring overall economic stability and forestalling risks.”
He assured that China’s high-quality development is moving forward with vigor and that there is great potential for positive momentum to last. “We are confident that we will accomplish this year’s growth target,” he said.
Looking ahead, Xie mentioned that next year, China plans to implement more proactive and impactful macroeconomic policies, aiming to prevent and resolve risks in key areas and withstand external shocks.
Despite rising protectionism globally, the ambassador stressed that China remains determined to deepen comprehensive reforms and expand high-standard opening up. He invited international businesses, including American companies, to share in China’s development opportunities.
Xie criticized the use of tariffs as a weapon, suggesting that such actions would isolate the instigator from other markets and lead to missed opportunities. He also cautioned against building “small yards with high fences,” arguing that it could not stifle innovation but would instead constrain oneself.
“Shutting China out in the name of de-risking poses a real risk to global industrial and supply chains,” Xie warned. “Exploiting ‘national security’ as a convenient pretext for suppressing others is in itself causing insecurity.”
He concluded by highlighting the importance of collaboration between China and the United States. “Only when China and the United States work together will both our countries and the world be safer and fare better,” he affirmed.
Ambassador Xie’s remarks underscore the significance of mutual cooperation and understanding in fostering global economic growth and stability, especially as the world navigates through challenging times.
