Beijing Kicks Off Forum on Swift Public Complaints Response
Beijing has opened the 2024 Forum on Swift Response to Public Complaints, focusing on innovative urban governance and citizen-centered public services. The event, co-hosted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China Media Group (CMG), the Communist Party of China (CPC) Beijing Municipal Committee, and the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, brought together leaders and experts from around the world.
In his opening speech, Yin Li, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee, emphasized the importance of prioritizing people in urban development. “We have always placed the people at the center of our efforts, continuously strengthening new urbanization and striving to modernize our governance systems and capabilities,” he said.
A City with History and Vision
Beijing, a city with over 3,000 years of history and the capital for more than 870 years, is home to 21.86 million people. In recent years, the city has implemented the “Swift Response to Public Complaints” initiative, proactively addressing citizen concerns and improving public services. This approach has resolved numerous local issues, making urban life more convenient and enriching for residents.
“We will continue to build an open, inclusive, and ecologically beautiful modern city,” Yin Li added. “Our goal is to create a world-class, harmonious, and livable capital.”
Global Perspectives on Urban Governance
The forum featured speeches from international figures, including Xu Haoliang, United Nations Under-Secretary-General; Omar Al-Razzaz, former Prime Minister of Jordan; and Andreas Grammatikogiannis, Deputy Mayor of Athens. They highlighted the global significance of effective urban governance in advancing sustainable development.
Gao Xiang, president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that Beijing is accelerating a new model of grassroots governance guided by the swift response initiative. “This reform embodies a people-centered approach, effectively responding to public needs and prioritizing the voices of the people,” he said.
Showcasing Real Stories
Fan Yun, deputy editor-in-chief of CMG, announced the launch of the documentary films “Hotline Beijing,” showcasing the city’s efforts in urban governance and its commitment to being credible, lovable, and respectable.
“CMG will leverage its broadcasting capabilities to tell vivid stories of Beijing, share experiences, and narrate the journey towards modernization,” Fan said.
Impressive Results and Future Goals
Since the launch of the swift response initiative in 2019, Beijing has received 150 million calls from citizens, with a resolution and satisfaction rate of 97%. The city aims to continue improving its governance to better meet the needs of its residents.
As the forum concluded, several key documents were released, including “Compilation of Research Papers on Swift Response to Public Complaints in Beijing” and “Evaluation Report on Worldwide City Hotline Services and Governance Effectiveness.”
This biennial forum has become an important platform for Beijing to share its experiences and engage with the global community on urban governance.
