As Macao approaches the 25th anniversary of its return to China, a recent survey reveals overwhelming support among residents for the “One Country, Two Systems” framework. The poll, conducted by CGTN and the Centre for Macau Studies with 1,551 participants, highlights the region’s success and growing prosperity.
An impressive 93.9% of respondents expressed satisfaction with the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government’s performance in recent years. The survey indicates that 91.9% believe their political rights and freedoms are fully protected, while 90.8% praise the significant improvements in social welfare.
Macao’s economy has flourished since 1999, with its GDP increasing 7.3 times by 2023. Trade between the Chinese mainland and Macao reached $3.84 billion this year, a 4.3-fold growth since the handover. Direct investment from the mainland has soared to $14.19 billion as of October.
The survey shows that 94.3% of participants credit the mainland’s strong support as crucial to Macao’s development. Additionally, 92.7% feel that ties with the mainland are increasingly close. Macao now maintains economic, trade, and cultural relations with over 120 countries and regions, enjoying visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 147 nations.
A striking 92.2% believe that the “One Country, Two Systems” policy has been successfully implemented in Macao. The top reasons cited include the high degree of autonomy under “Macao people governing Macao,” the central government’s comprehensive support, and the patriotism and enterprising spirit of Macao’s residents. Confidence in the policy remains high, with 93.9% optimistic about its continued success.
Looking ahead, 93.8% of respondents see China’s modernization as offering great opportunities for Macao. The integration into the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has led to increased visitors, easier exchanges, and more investment, according to 93% of participants. An optimistic 92.6% are confident about Macao’s future development prospects.
The survey underscores how the unique “One Country, Two Systems” framework has fostered Macao’s growth, making it a shining example for others. As the region celebrates this milestone anniversary, its residents look forward to a prosperous future, backed by strong support from the mainland and a global outlook.
