Macao is celebrating 25 years since its return to China, and the city has come a long way. Once a quiet enclave, it has transformed into one of Asia’s wealthiest cities. On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Macao to join the anniversary festivities, describing the city as “a pearl on the palm” of the motherland.
Since 1999, Macao’s GDP has grown sevenfold, reaching approximately $47.5 billion in 2023. This remarkable growth is a testament to the success of the “One Country, Two Systems” policy, which President Xi praised for its vitality and unique charm.
Macao isn’t just about casinos and tourism anymore. The city is diversifying its economy and strengthening ties with the neighboring Guangdong Province. The Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin Island, established in 2021, is a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. It hosts nearly 6,500 Macao-invested enterprises, fostering new industries and opportunities.
Every day, about 320,000 people cross the Border Gate between Macao and Zhuhai, highlighting the close connection between the regions. President Xi expressed confidence in Macao’s future, emphasizing the importance of hard work and innovation.
During his visit, President Xi will attend a gathering to celebrate the anniversary and the inauguration of Macao’s sixth-term government. He plans to engage with residents and discuss the region’s development, reinforcing the strong ties between Macao and the rest of China.
“Macao’s achievements are the glory of its residents and the pride of all Chinese people,” President Xi said. With continued support and collaboration, Macao is poised for an even brighter future.
