Chinese President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed his commitment to the “One Country, Two Systems” policy during a speech on Friday, setting high expectations for the newly inaugurated government of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).
In an exclusive interview, Alexandre Leitão, the Portuguese consul-general in Macao, expressed optimism about the future of Sino-Portuguese relations. He believes the renewed support from Beijing paves the way for deeper cooperation between Portugal and the SAR.
“This is a significant moment for Macao,” Leitão said. “President Xi’s reaffirmation of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy not only ensures stability but also opens new avenues for collaboration.”
Macao, a former Portuguese colony that returned to Chinese sovereignty in 1999, has long served as a cultural and economic bridge between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.
Leitão highlighted the potential for enhanced partnerships in education, tourism, and trade. “We are looking forward to strengthening ties, especially in areas that benefit young people and promote mutual understanding,” he added.
The consul-general emphasized the importance of youth engagement in fostering international relationships. “The future lies with the younger generations. By working together, we can build a more connected and prosperous world.”
As Macao embarks on a new chapter under its government, both China and Portugal appear eager to seize opportunities that will bring their nations closer.
