China Takes Countermeasures Against 2 Canadian Institutions 20 People

China Sanctions Two Canadian Organizations and 20 People

China has announced countermeasures against two Canadian organizations and 20 individuals associated with them. According to a statement by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the sanctions took effect on December 21, 2024.

The targeted organizations are the “Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project” and the “Canada-Tibet Committee.” China has frozen the assets of these groups within its borders and banned all transactions and cooperation between them and Chinese individuals or organizations.

The measures also affect 20 personnel from these organizations. Their assets in China have been frozen, and they are prohibited from conducting any transactions or cooperation with Chinese entities. Additionally, they will not be issued visas or allowed entry into China, including Hong Kong and Macao.

This move comes as a response to actions taken by Canada, though specific details were not disclosed. China stated that the countermeasures are lawful and justified, aiming to safeguard its sovereignty and national security.

The sanctions highlight ongoing tensions between China and Canada over issues related to human rights and allegations concerning the regions of Xinjiang and Tibet. Both the “Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project” and the “Canada-Tibet Committee” are involved in advocacy related to these regions.

As the situation develops, the international community watches closely. The impact of these sanctions on Sino-Canadian relations remains to be seen.
