China’s Lawmakers Address Major National Issues at Key Meeting

China’s top lawmakers gathered this Sunday during an important session of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee to discuss several significant reports impacting the nation.

Zhao Leji, the chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, led the plenary meeting where lawmakers examined a report on enforcing the Law on State-Owned Assets of Enterprises. The report suggested improvements to how state-owned enterprises and capital are managed, aiming to enhance efficiency and oversight.

The session also focused on the Yellow River Protection Law. Lawmakers reviewed its enforcement, emphasizing the need for legal governance of the river and efforts to preserve and restore the ecosystem of its vast basin.

An audit rectification report for 2023 was another highlight. It revealed that by the end of September, corrections involving approximately 538 billion yuan (around $74.8 billion) had been made, and over 2,800 individuals were held accountable for various oversights and errors.

Discussions also covered the allocation and use of fiscal funds dedicated to disaster prevention, mitigation, and emergency management. Proposals were made to enhance fiscal policies and optimize how funds are allocated to improve disaster response.

Additionally, the committee heard reports on farmland protection, legislative recording and review, and measures to address misconduct and corruption among the populace.
