Meeting of the Group of friends for Peace on the Ukraine Crisis Held

Global South Nations Unite for Peace in Ukraine

Representatives from countries across the Global South came together at the United Nations on December 18, 2024, to discuss the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. This was the first meeting of the Group of “Friends for Peace” since their ministerial gathering in September.

The delegates highlighted the importance of respecting every nation’s sovereignty and territorial borders. They stressed that peaceful solutions are crucial for resolving international conflicts, echoing principles from the historic Bandung Conference—a landmark meeting of Asian and African nations in 1955 that promoted peace and cooperation.

Concerned about the escalating conflict in Ukraine, the participants called for a halt to the fighting. “We need immediate de-escalation to prevent further harm and suffering,” one representative said. They urged all parties involved to engage in open dialogue and find political solutions based on the United Nations Charter and international law.

The “Friends for Peace” group believes that countries from the Global South and the UN can play a significant role in promoting peace. They agreed to stay actively involved in seeking ways to end the conflict through diplomacy.

This meeting shows how nations from different regions are uniting to advocate for peace. As the situation in Ukraine remains tense, the Group of “Friends for Peace” is determined to help bring about a peaceful resolution.
