China’s 2024 Journey: Putting People First

In 2024, China has taken significant strides in its modernization journey by placing its people at the very heart of development. President Xi Jinping has consistently emphasized that “the people’s well-being matters the most.”

Throughout the year, President Xi visited communities across the nation, from bustling cities to rural villages, engaging directly with everyday people. He listened to their stories, concerns, and hopes, reinforcing his commitment to serving the population. “The well-being of the people of all ethnic groups and every household is my concern,” he stated during a visit to a multi-ethnic community in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

Investing in the People

Reflecting this commitment, the Chinese government allocated a substantial 70% of its 2024 expenditure—about 28.55 trillion yuan ($3.91 trillion)—to initiatives that directly enhance people’s lives. Significant increases in budgets for education, healthcare, social insurance, and employment underscore this focus.

Securing the Harvest

A key priority has been ensuring grain security and revitalizing rural areas. Understanding the importance of feeding a nation of over 1.4 billion people, President Xi frequently visited agricultural regions, discussing crop production and rural incomes with farmers. “China must secure its own grain supply,” he emphasized during a visit to Hunan Province.

These efforts have paid off with a record-breaking grain output exceeding 706 million tonnes in 2024, a 1.6% increase from the previous year. The expansion of grain planting areas and improved yields per unit area have contributed to this success, bolstering food security for the nation.

Revitalizing Rural Communities

After declaring the elimination of absolute poverty in 2021, China has turned its focus to preventing a relapse into poverty and promoting rural revitalization. In 2024, over 177 billion yuan was allocated to support development in key rural counties. The per capita disposable income of rural residents rose to 16,740 yuan, marking a real-term increase of 6.3%.

Special attention has been given to ethnic minority villages, with 7.4 billion yuan dedicated to improving production and living conditions. Employment programs have flourished, creating millions of jobs for low-income workers and ensuring stable incomes.

Looking Ahead

China’s approach in 2024 showcases a model of modernization that prioritizes people over capital. By investing in the well-being of its citizens, securing food supplies, and revitalizing rural communities, China aims to build a prosperous society where no one is left behind.
