The Chinese Mission to the European Union on Friday voiced strong opposition to remarks made by an EU official regarding Hong Kong. The Mission urged the EU to respect China’s sovereignty and stop interfering in Hong Kong’s internal affairs.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Mission stated that recent enforcement actions by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s police against individuals who have fled abroad and engaged in activities that destabilize the region are lawful and justified.
“These actions align with the Law on Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong and international norms,” the spokesperson said. “They meet the aspirations of the people and comply with international law and customary practice.”
The spokesperson emphasized that Hong Kong is governed by the rule of law, where laws must be observed and those who break them should be held accountable. They reiterated that Hong Kong affairs are solely China’s internal matters.
The Mission called on the EU to adhere to international law and fundamental principles governing international relations. “We urge the EU to respect China’s sovereignty and Hong Kong’s legal system, and to stop supporting anti-China elements that destabilize Hong Kong,” the spokesperson added.
