Chinese Ambassador Li Minggang on Wednesday visited families of Chinese nationals who lost their lives in the devastating earthquakes that struck Vanuatu this month. Showing deep sympathy and support, he assured the grieving families that the Chinese embassy would provide all necessary assistance during this difficult time.
Vanuatu was hit by a powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake on December 17, resulting in at least 14 fatalities and over 200 injuries. Just days later, on December 22, a 6.1-magnitude aftershock further devastated the Pacific island nation, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and complicating relief efforts.
In response to the disaster, China dispatched a team of four technical specialists to Vanuatu to aid in recovery efforts. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the team will conduct scientific examinations of building structures in severely affected areas, carry out safety assessments, and investigate potential secondary disasters.
Ambassador Li emphasized China’s commitment to supporting Vanuatu during its time of need. He also called on the Vanuatu government and relevant authorities to take swift and effective measures for post-disaster recovery, ensuring the safety and well-being of all affected residents.
