As the Spring Festival approaches, the coastal county of Xiangshan in east China’s Zhejiang Province comes alive with the vibrant glow of fish lanterns. These lanterns, handcrafted by local artisans, symbolize abundance, prosperity, and renewal, embodying centuries-old traditions and the community’s deep connection to the sea.
Rooted in the ancient Chinese saying “nián nián yǒu yú” (年年有余), meaning “May you have surplus year after year,” fish lanterns are more than just decorations—they are a beacon of hope and good fortune for the coming year. For the fishermen of Xiangshan, these luminous creations reflect their aspirations for bountiful catches and joyful times ahead.
Among the dedicated craftsmen is 80-year-old Bao Jiqin, a native of Shipu town in Xiangshan. Having nurtured a passion for drawing since childhood, Bao began making carp-shaped lanterns at a young age. In the late 1990s, following Xiangshan’s first Fishing Season Festival—a celebration marking the end of the fishing moratorium and the start of a new season—he expanded his designs to include various marine creatures like yellow croakers and cuttlefish.
“I wanted my lanterns to capture the true essence of the sea,” Bao shared. He meticulously studies books and materials on marine life to ensure his lanterns accurately represent the appearance and behavior of real fish. His dedication has helped preserve and evolve this traditional craft, passing it down to younger generations.
Every year, on the 14th day of the first lunar month, the streets of Xiangshan are illuminated by a grand parade. Locals, holding their fish lanterns high, walk together to celebrate the new year. The glowing procession not only showcases the community’s artistic talents but also reinforces their shared cultural heritage.
The revival and continuation of the fish lantern tradition highlight the important role that cultural practices play in uniting communities. For the youth in Xiangshan and beyond, it serves as a reminder of the richness of their heritage and the enduring values of hope and prosperity.
