A Chinese mainland spokesperson has criticized Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities for making baseless claims about a recent undersea cable incident.
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, spoke out on Wednesday in response to the DPP’s assertions that the incident was “not a mere accident” and marked an escalation of the mainland’s activities to pressure Taiwan.
“Undersea cable damage is a common occurrence,” Chen emphasized, noting that over 100 such incidents happen globally each year. “The DPP’s remarks are unfounded and only serve to stir up anti-mainland sentiment.”
According to media reports, an undersea communication cable near the port of Keelung was allegedly damaged last week by an anchor dragged by a cargo ship.
Chen urged the DPP authorities to establish the facts before making accusations. “Jumping to conclusions without evidence reflects an irresponsible attitude,” he said.
Undersea cables are vital for global communication, carrying internet and telephone traffic across continents. Damage to these cables can disrupt services, but incidents are often accidental due to maritime activities.
The spokesperson called for calm and facts-based discussions to avoid unnecessary tensions.
