The region of Xizang has been rattled by a powerful magnitude 6.8 earthquake, leaving a trail of destruction and prompting a massive rescue operation. As of Wednesday morning, authorities have confirmed 126 fatalities and 188 injuries, including 28 individuals in critical condition.
Damaged roads have been quickly repaired, and power has been restored in Dingri County’s urban area and several townships, enabling smoother rescue and relief operations. Medical teams from the military and local institutions have arrived on the scene to aid in search and rescue efforts.
The Ministry of Emergency Management has mobilized substantial resources, deploying 1,850 personnel and three helicopters to the affected areas. Over 3,600 homes have been reported damaged, displacing thousands of residents.
By Tuesday night, around 30,400 locals had been relocated to 14 temporary settlements. The first batch of 34 mobile shelters arrived in the quake-hit area on Tuesday night, with an additional 1,200 shelters scheduled to arrive on Wednesday to accommodate the displaced residents.
The region continues to experience seismic activity, with over 660 aftershocks recorded as of 10 a.m. Wednesday. The strongest aftershock measured at a magnitude of 4.4, adding to the challenges faced by rescue teams and residents alike.
