Rescue Efforts Conclude as Xizang Rebuilds After 6.8 Magnitude Earthquake

The massive search and rescue operation in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region is entering its final phase after a powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake jolted Dingri County early Tuesday morning. With thousands affected and communities disrupted, the focus now shifts to healing and rebuilding.

“Our priority has shifted to resettling displaced residents and kickstarting post-disaster reconstruction,” said Hong Li, head of the regional emergency management department, during a press conference on Wednesday. “We will spare no effort in searching for those still unaccounted for and treating the injured.”

Over 10,000 rescuers were swiftly deployed to the quake-stricken areas, successfully locating and rescuing 407 individuals, according to Wang Fanghong, mayor of Xigaze—the city that oversees Dingri County. “We have established 187 resettlement sites, providing shelter for 46,500 relocated people,” Wang reported.

Amidst the chaos, there was relief for tourists caught in the disaster zone. All 484 visitors in Dingri, including 13 foreign nationals, have safely returned to Xigaze. The swift response ensured their well-being and safe passage out of the affected areas.

The central authorities have dispatched additional aid to support the recovery efforts, including 20,000 essential items like quilts and folding beds, 2,000 bunkhouses, and 200,000 winter supplies. These resources aim to provide immediate relief to those impacted as temperatures drop.

As the region begins the long journey toward recovery, communities are coming together to rebuild homes and restore livelihoods. The resilience and solidarity shown promise a hopeful path forward after the devastation.
