Grenadian Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell is set to embark on an official visit to China from January 11 to 17, marking a significant milestone in the relationship between the two nations. The visit coincides with the 20th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic ties on January 20.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun announced the visit on Thursday, expressing China’s warm welcome to Prime Minister Mitchell. “Grenada is an important country in the Caribbean and a vital cooperation partner of China in the region,” Guo stated.
During his stay, Prime Minister Mitchell will meet with President Xi Jinping to discuss strengthening bilateral relations. Premier Li Qiang will host a welcoming ceremony and hold talks with Mitchell, after which they will jointly attend a signing ceremony for cooperation agreements.
Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, will also meet with the Grenadian leader. The discussions aim to deepen mutual understanding and explore opportunities for collaboration on issues of shared interest.
In addition to Beijing, Prime Minister Mitchell will visit Zhejiang province and the bustling metropolis of Shanghai, highlighting the broad scope of Grenada-China relations.
Over the past two decades, China and Grenada have built a relationship based on mutual respect and equality. “The two countries have understood and supported each other on issues concerning core interests and major concerns,” Guo noted. “We believe that Prime Minister Mitchell’s visit will further cement political mutual trust, enhance friendship, and elevate our bilateral relations to new heights.”
The visit underscores the growing importance of cooperation between China and nations in the Global South, as they work together to address common challenges and promote development.
