Two earthquakes struck southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on Monday night, causing tremors felt across the region, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
The first quake, a magnitude 4.9, hit Dingri County in Xigaze at 8:57 p.m. Beijing Time. Just one minute later, at 8:58 p.m., a second, stronger magnitude 5.0 earthquake shook the same area, as reported by the CENC.
Residents in the vicinity reported feeling the ground shake during the back-to-back quakes. Authorities are assessing the situation, and there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.
Xizang Autonomous Region, located on the Tibetan Plateau, is known for its seismic activity due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This region frequently experiences earthquakes as a result of these geological forces.
Local emergency services have been dispatched to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas. Citizens are advised to stay alert for aftershocks and follow guidance from officials.
