The Legend of the White Snake, one of China’s most cherished folk tales, has captivated audiences for centuries with its blend of romance, tragedy, and the supernatural. The story tells of the profound love between Xu Xian, a mortal man, and Bai Suzhen, a white snake spirit who takes the form of a beautiful woman.
Recently, actors from the Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre brought this enchanting tale to life at the scenic West Lake. In a mesmerizing performance, they depicted the iconic moment when Xu Xian and Bai Suzhen first meet.
As the story goes, Bai Suzhen and her sister Xiaoqing—a green snake spirit—are strolling by West Lake when dark clouds gather and rain begins to pour. Seeking shelter, they find a boat where a young man, Xu Xian, is holding an umbrella. The sisters board the boat, and Xu kindly offers his umbrella to them. This chance encounter sparks the beginning of their legendary romance.
The performance not only showcases the rich cultural heritage of Chinese folk tales but also introduces the timeless themes of love and destiny to a new generation.
