Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump spoke by phone on Friday, expressing their commitment to enhancing China-U.S. relations and cooperating for mutual benefit.
President Xi congratulated Trump on his election victory, highlighting the importance both leaders place on the relationship between the two nations. “China and the United States are two great countries pursuing their own dreams and striving to improve the lives of their people,” Xi said. “We share extensive common interests and broad space for cooperation.”
Xi emphasized that while differences are inevitable due to differing national conditions, the key lies in respecting each other’s core interests and properly resolving issues through dialogue. He urged both nations to uphold principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation. “China and the U.S. can become partners and friends, achieving mutual success and prosperity that benefits both countries and the world,” he added.
Addressing sensitive topics, Xi expressed hope that the U.S. would handle the Taiwan question with extra prudence, underscoring its significance to China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also noted that confrontation and conflict should not be options in their economic and trade relations, which he described as inherently mutually beneficial.
Trump thanked Xi for his congratulations and expressed his desire to maintain dialogue and communication. “I cherish our great relationship and look forward to meeting with President Xi at an early date,” Trump said. He emphasized the importance of the U.S. and China maintaining their long-standing friendship and working together to safeguard world peace.
The two leaders also exchanged views on major international and regional issues, including the Ukraine crisis and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They agreed to establish a strategic communication channel to maintain regular contact on issues of common concern.
