YUPING DONG AUTONOMOUS COUNTY, Guizhou Province — As the Chinese New Year approaches, the streets of Yuping come alive with the aroma of freshly made miancaiba, a traditional glutinous rice cake that holds a special place in the hearts of the local Dong people.
Made from glutinous rice and white mugwort, miancaiba is more than just a festive treat; it’s a symbol of prosperity and unity for the year ahead. Families gather to handcraft these round and plump cakes, stuffing them with an array of fillings like tofu, peanuts, sesame seeds, and cured meat, each adding its own unique flavor and significance.
“Making miancaiba is a cherished tradition in our community,” says Li Hua, a resident of Yuping. “It’s not just about the food; it’s about coming together, sharing stories, and passing down our heritage to the younger generations.”
The process begins with soaking and grinding the glutinous rice, then mixing it with finely chopped white mugwort, which gives the cake its distinctive aroma and color. The dough is then shaped into balls, filled with the chosen ingredients, and steamed to perfection.
For many young people in Yuping, this tradition is a way to reconnect with their roots. “I love helping my grandmother make miancaiba,” shares 18-year-old Wang Mei. “It’s a fun way to learn about our culture and enjoy delicious food at the same time.”
As families share their homemade miancaiba with neighbors and friends, the spirit of community blossoms, embodying the hopes for a prosperous and happy new year.
