Thailand’s agriculture sector, long considered the backbone of the nation, is facing new challenges due to global warming and an aging population. In response, innovative farmers are adopting cutting-edge technologies to boost productivity and improve crop quality.
One notable advancement is the integration of drones into farming practices. Thailand is the world’s largest producer of durians, and durian farms across the country have begun utilizing drones manufactured by the Chinese company DJI. These drones assist farmers with tasks such as crop monitoring, pesticide spraying, and data collection, leading to increased efficiency and yield.
“Using drones has transformed the way we manage our durian orchards,” said Somchai, a durian farmer from the Chanthaburi province. “We’re able to cover more ground in less time, and the data collected helps us make better decisions about irrigation and fertilization.”
The adoption of drone technology not only addresses labor shortages caused by an aging workforce but also helps mitigate the effects of climate change by enabling precise and sustainable farming practices. Young farmers and tech-savvy entrepreneurs see this as an opportunity to modernize agriculture and ensure food security for future generations.
As Thailand continues to embrace technological solutions, collaborations with companies like DJI highlight the potential for advancements in agriculture across the region. By integrating innovative tools, Thai farmers are setting a precedent for others facing similar challenges in the Global South.
