China Calls for Development Unity with India, Says Foreign Ministry Spokesperson
China has called on India to concentrate on development and cooperation, aiming to bring their bilateral relationship back on track for healthy and stable growth. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the remarks on Tuesday during a daily press briefing.
Guo’s comments came in response to Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar’s recent speech, where he highlighted the significance of India-China ties for both nations and the global order. Jaishankar emphasized that India will handle its relations with China from a long-term perspective.
“As two ancient civilizations and major developing countries, China and India should focus on development and cooperation,” Guo said. He stressed that this approach serves the fundamental interests of over 2.8 billion people in both countries, aligns with the aspirations of regional nations, and contributes to global peace and prosperity.
Guo noted that both sides need to earnestly implement the important common understandings reached by their leaders, including viewing each other as development opportunities rather than threats, and as cooperation partners rather than competitors.
“We need to view and handle bilateral relations from a strategic height and long-term perspective,” Guo stated. “Bringing the relations back to the track of healthy and stable development will help us find the right path for big, neighboring countries to live in harmony and develop side by side.”
He also emphasized that China and India should adhere to the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, practice genuine multilateralism, and advocate for an equal and orderly multipolar world. By doing so, they can make greater contributions to safeguarding and promoting world peace, stability, development, and prosperity.
