Chinese Ambassador to Britain Zheng Zeguang has called for a revival of the “icebreaking” spirit to strengthen China-UK relations. Speaking at the annual “Icebreakers” Chinese New Year Dinner on Wednesday, Zheng emphasized the importance of collaboration and mutual respect between the two nations.
“In this new age of changes and turbulence, China-UK relations have become even more important both for the two countries and the world at large,” Zheng said. “More than ever, we need to draw inspiration from the ‘icebreaking’ spirit.”
Zheng highlighted recent progress in China-UK relations and urged both sides to build upon this momentum. He called for the implementation of common understandings reached between leaders of the two countries and the productive outcomes of the 11th Economic and Financial Dialogue held recently in Beijing.
The ambassador also advocated for restarting dialogue and collaboration in various areas, including new energy, artificial intelligence, science and technology, trade, education, and international and regional issues.
“Most importantly, we should handle bilateral relations in the spirit of mutual respect, non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, equality, and mutual benefit,” Zheng added. “We do have differences and sensitive issues between us, and they have to be dealt with properly.”
Reflecting on China’s achievements over the past year, Zheng noted that the country has made solid gains in advancing Chinese modernization despite global challenges. He highlighted that China’s gross domestic product exceeded 134 trillion yuan (approximately $18.43 trillion), with an annual growth rate of 5%.
Looking ahead, Zheng expressed confidence in China’s continued pursuit of high-quality development and modernization.
The “Icebreakers” Chinese New Year Dinner commemorates the historic 1954 mission led by Jack Perry, founder of the London Export Corporation. Perry led a group of 48 British businesspeople to Beijing, establishing one of the first modern-day trade links with China. This group became known as the “Icebreakers,” and their legacy continues to inspire efforts to strengthen China-UK relations today.
