China is gearing up for the first major cold wave of 2025, expected to sweep across most parts of the country starting Thursday. The Central Meteorological Observatory forecasts widespread snow, rain, strong winds, and significant temperature drops.
According to Xu Jun, chief forecaster at the Central Meteorological Observatory, the cold spell will bring dramatic changes, with temperatures across most regions dropping by 8 to 12 degrees Celsius. Some areas in northwestern and northern China may experience drops exceeding 14 degrees Celsius.
“We anticipate strong winds accompanying the temperature plunge,” Xu said. “Eastern and southern coastal areas will also face strong winds later in the week.”
The cold wave coincides with the peak of the Spring Festival travel rush, potentially impacting millions of travelers. Tian Hua, chief expert at the Public Meteorological Service Center of the China Meteorological Administration, warned of heavy snow to blizzard conditions in the eastern part of northwest China on January 24. Highways such as Lianhuo, Jingkun, Fuyin, and Erguang in Gansu, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Henan provinces are at high risk of snow accumulation and road icing.
On January 25, the cold wave will reach its widest impact, with snow or sleet affecting the northwest region, north China, the western Huanghuai region, and southwestern areas, significantly disrupting transportation.
“From January 26 to 27, snow and rain will primarily affect transportation in the northeast and southwest regions,” Tian noted. Heavy snow or blizzards are expected to cause snow accumulation and high risks of road icing on highways such as Daguang, Danxi, and Suiman in north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang in the northeast.
Meanwhile, Yamdrok Yumtso Lake has started to freeze in the Xizang Autonomous Region, signaling the severity of the cold spell in southwest China.
Authorities are urging residents and travelers to take necessary precautions, stay updated with the latest weather forecasts, and ensure safety during the festive season.
