Over 40 students from Harvard University immersed themselves in the rich tapestry of Chinese intangible cultural heritage during a visit to Hangzhou, east China’s Zhejiang Province, on Wednesday. The group explored traditional arts, including trying their hands at woodblock printing and donning authentic Chinese attires.
The students, part of an educational exchange program, engaged with local artisans who introduced them to the centuries-old techniques that have shaped Chinese culture. “It’s incredible to see how much history and skill goes into these crafts,” said one of the students. “Participating in woodblock printing was a highlight; it felt like stepping back in time.”
The experience aimed to foster cross-cultural understanding and appreciation among young people from different parts of the world. By engaging directly with China’s intangible cultural heritage, the students gained a deeper insight into the traditions that continue to influence contemporary Chinese society.
Hangzhou, known for its historical significance and scenic beauty, provided the perfect backdrop for this cultural exchange. The visit not only enriched the students’ academic perspectives but also encouraged them to become ambassadors of cultural appreciation in an increasingly globalized world.
