Around the world, Chinese communities are preparing to welcome the Year of the Snake on January 29, 2025. In celebration of this occasion, China Media Group (CMG) has unveiled a new mascot named Si Shengsheng, embodying this year’s theme: “Year of the Snake, Keep Your Spirits Awake.”
The design of Si Shengsheng draws inspiration from “Si,” a character in the ancient oracle bone script that represents the word “snake.” Oracle bone script, among the earliest forms of Chinese writing, was discovered in the early 20th century inscribed on animal bones—typically from oxen or turtles—in Anyang, Henan Province. These inscriptions were used by the royal court of the Shang Dynasty for divination purposes.
By integrating elements of the oracle bone script into modern design, CMG bridges the rich cultural heritage of ancient China with contemporary aesthetics. Si Shengsheng not only honors traditional Chinese culture but also resonates with younger generations, bringing ancient symbols to life in a vibrant and engaging way.
The introduction of Si Shengsheng highlights the ongoing relevance of historical art forms in today’s world, celebrating the continuity and evolution of Chinese culture as communities worldwide prepare for the festivities of the Lunar New Year.
